Abstract German business confidence exceeded economists' forecasts in January and reached a five-month high, according to the Munich-based Ifo Institute survey. The Ifo business climate index, based on a survey of 7,000 executives, rose to 108.3 from 107.3 in December. Economists forecasted a rise to 107.6 (see chart 1). Ifo's gauge of the current situation declined to 116.3 from 116.7 in January, while an index measuring executives' expectations advanced to 100.9 from 98.6 in the previous month. Although the current situation index has been deteriorating, executives' outlook for the German economy--the driver of European growth--improved overall.
