Abstract
We expect the pressures that caused U.S. box-office revenues to decline 3.7% in 2011 (according to boxofficemojo.com) to continue in 2012. Since 2003, attendance per screen has been flat or down in every year other than 2009. We expect domestic attendance to likely be down again in 2012. Competing technologies (e.g., home theater systems and the Internet), the shrinking window between theatrical film release and home distribution (via DVD, video-on-demand, etc.), and waning 3-D popularity all contributed to the box-office decline in 2011, and we believe will continue to do so going forward.
