Refrigerated Truck/Van and Refrigerated Trailer Manufacturing in North America: Market Size, Shares & Analysis

STN has identified 33 manufacturers of refrigerated van and semi-trailer bodies, which together comprised a $1.25 billion industry in 2010. The refrigerated van body segment and the refrigerated semi-trailer segment have distinct manufacturers, with very few companies manufacturing both van bodies and semi-trailers.
Of the twenty-seven manufacturers of refrigerated van bodies identified, the top five manufacturers account for more than 75% of total production.
Production of refrigerated semi-trailer units is even more concentrated. Of the nine manufacturers comprising this segment, the top three manufacturers account for more than 90% of total production.
Refrigerated body manufacture is relatively more stable than other truck body and semi-trailer segments, as this industry caters to basic requirements, i.e., transportation of food and health care products. Having said that, refrigerated van body and semi-trailer manufacturers have experienced shrinkage in demand since 2007. STN estimates indicate a 30% decline in revenues in the refrigerated body segment in the period 2007 to 2010.
Growth in the perishable food market is the key demand driver for refrigerated van bodies and semi-trailers. This sector is driven by consumer spending, and hence, growth of refrigerated road transport is linked to domestic consumption levels and the general economic environment. Increasing quality requirements for perishable food products, medicine and healthcare products are also factors impacting the refrigerated road transport demand.
