Turkey represents one of the largest insurance industries in Central and Eastern Europe. Between 2007 and 2011, the Turkish insurance industry recorded healthy growth which was attributed to the growing economy, strong FDI inflow in the insurance industry and the implementation of several laws aimed at the liberalization of the Turkish insurance industry. However, the country has one of the most underdeveloped life insurance industries among the emerging economies and the life insurance industry in the country contributes to less than one percent of total written premiums as a percentage of GDP. The low penetration of life insurance products in Turkey reflects the lack of public knowledge of the benefits of life insurance.
