U.S. corporations will begin announcing their second-quarter 2010 earnings next week, and S&P 500 Index constituents are expected to report $19.62 per share according to Capital IQ's aggregated analyst estimates as of June 30, 2010. Anticipated second-quarter earnings actually represent a slight decline from the $19.74 earned in first-quarter 2010 (see chart). However, we note that following the upcoming quarter, forecast earnings for S&P 500 corporations begin a multiquarter increase to reach $26.15 per share in fourth-quarter 2011, according to aggregated Capital IQ estimate data. In our opinion, if S&P 500 corporations beat second-quarter expectations even with the recent high volatility as a result of the European sovereign credit crisis, investors will have good reason to be confident in analysts'...
