Intraday Economic News: Initial Jobless Claims Rise To 362,000 Mar 12

Initial jobless claims rose 8,000 to 362,000 in the week ended March 3, which was slightly worse than the 355,000 consensus expectation though still below the 400,000 threshold, indicating a jobs market moving away from recessionary territory, for the seventh straight month. Claims averaged 355,000 in February, the lowest monthly average since February 2008. Continuing claims rose 10,000 to 3.416 million in the week ended Feb. 25, keeping the adjusted insured unemployment rate at 2.7%. The initial claims reading was a bit worse than expected, to cool sentiment a bit, as markets wait for tomorrow morning's Bureau of Labor Statistics payrolls report. We still expect the government to report that 230,000 new jobs were created in February....
