The rating on Stamford, Conn.-based Silgan Holdings Inc. is supported by its satisfactory business position as a major North American producer of rigid consumer goods packaging, its fairly steady earnings and free cash flow generation, and its demonstrated ability to maintain (or quickly return to) a capital structure consistent with the rating despite periodic acquisitions. These attributes are offset by somewhat aggressive financial policies and other risks associated with the company's strategy of growth via acquisitions. Silgan has annual revenues of $3 billion. Its business mix is about 60% metal food cans, with the remainder fairly evenly split between plastic containers and metal and plastic closures.
