The importance of good corporate governance is now widely recognized, with many studies demonstrating that companies with such a characteristic can attract higher stock price premiums and thus achieve better long-term performance. The Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the recent global corporate scandals, such as those involving Enron, Worldcom and Parmalat, have highlighted the importance of good corporate governance for the long-term survival of companies.
