Although Turkey’s medium-term macroeconomic outlook has deteriorated significantly in recent months owing to a confluence of domestic and external factors, we still view the country’s food and drink market as one of the most promising globally. Our outlook is supported by the country’s large and growing population base and aspiring consumers, who are increasingly looking for convenience and novelty. The development of modern mass grocery retail (MGR) outlets will continue to support the development of both values and volumes of food and drink products.

Key Company Trends Turkish Confectionery Sector Continues to Attract Multinational Interest – In January 2012, Italian confectionery firm Ferrero was reported to be planning a new EUR90mn (US$124mn) confectionery facility in Turkey. The site, located in Manisa province, is expected to be operational by 2013. Ferrero aims to target the growing Turkish retail market for packaged products, in particular chocolate, as Turkey has seen its growth rate for chocolate exceed the rest of Western Europe over the five years to 2011. Ferrero will initially employ 200 staff, with plans to hire a further 200 when operations grow.

Local Bottled Water Producer Acquired by Agthia Group – In December 2011, UAE-based food and beverage company Agthia Group acquired Turkish spring water manufacturer Pelit Su. Agthia Group Chairman Rashed Mubarak Al Hajeri said that the acquisition was indicative of the company's plans for global growth in various sectors of the food and beverage industry.

Key Risks To Outlook Economic Headwinds – Downside risks to the Turkish economy are becoming increasingly pronounced in light of growing domestic inflationary pressures, a precarious external position and a deteriorating global macroeconomic backdrop. Accordingly, we have revised down our 2012 real GDP growth forecast to 1.8%, from 4.5% previously. Moreover, with the Turkish central bank likely required to maintain its tightening bias to combat elevated inflation, there remains the potential for a hard landing for the domestic economy at some point in 2012.
