Russia is one of the world's leading energy producers. It is the world's largest oil producer, having in recent years exceeded Saudi Arabia's annual output, and is the second-largest gas producer (the shale gas boom in the US having allowed that country to take the lead). Russia is also one of the world's largest coal producers.

Energy will continue to be the dominant sector in Russia, despite attempts to foster economic diversification. Plans to privatise stakes in state-owned companies of strategic importance are expected to slow under the presidency of Vladimir Putin. Following strong growth in the 2000s, only a modest expansion in energy output is forecast over the medium term.

Oil production growth has slowed since peaking in the 1990s, but output reached a post-Soviet high of 10.45m barrels/day in 2012. There is, however, little prospect that the heady growth rates of the early 2000s will return.
