Political stability will remain under strain following the resignation at end-July 2014 of the ruling coalition, comprising the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), which represents mainly ethnic Turks.

The main opposition party, the centre-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB), is in a strong position to emerge as the largest party from a snap poll scheduled for October 5th 2014. However, the CEDB is unlikely to win an outright victory, and it may need to form either a minority government or find coalition allies.

If the CEDB forms a new government, it will promote economic growth, re-launch privatisations and improve the business environment, while returning to a policy of fiscal consolidation-albeit not at the pace it previously pursued, which led to mass protests and the CEDB government's resignation in early 2013.
