Political stability will come under increasing strain following the resignation on November 14th 2016 of the centre-right government, which comprised Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB) and the Reformist Bloc (RB). The government resigned after its presidential candidate was defeated by Rumen Radev, nominated by the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

Following his inauguration on January 19th, Mr Radev appointed a caretaker government and called a snap election for March 26th 2017. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the CEDB to win the pre-term election narrowly, but it will find it difficult to form a new ruling coalition, which will probably require the participation of several smaller parties.

We expect the new government to continue, in general, its predecessor's policies of fiscal consolidation, promoting growth and improving the business environment.
