In June 2016 the government, led by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and Most (Bridge), collapsed. An early parliamentary election was held on September 11th. The HDZ and its partners won a plurality of the vote and formed another coalition with Most. The new government received the votes of 91 members of parliament-a clear majority in the 151-seat parliament.

The Economist Intelligence Unit expects a more stable government under the leadership of Andrej Plenkovic, the new centrist leader of the HDZ.

The government has passed a tax reform package and is seeking to improve the business environment. However, progress on structural reforms, particularly concerning healthcare and pensions, will remain slow.
