Opposition members of parliament (MPs) have been warned by the speaker of the lower house, Pandikar Amin Mulia, that they would face disqualification should they boycott the swearing-in ceremony on June 24th.
On June 11th Mr Pandikar warned that MPs who did not attend the swearing-in ceremony would not be given a second chance to be sworn in and that they would be automatically disqualified after six months. The lower house speaker said that a boycott would be an insult to the king, the yang di-pertuan agong, and parliamentary democracy.
The boycott had been suggested by one of the three parties in the opposition Pakatan Rakyat alliance, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), as an act of protest against the May 5th election result, which they believe was deeply flawed. This claim has been refuted by the Barisan Nasional government and the Election Commission.
