The Economist Intelligence Unit expects King Abdullah II to remain in power and to initiate only modest political changes. Successive governments have failed to satisfy opposition demands for political reform. Abdullah Ensour kept the post of prime minister following the January 2013 election and is likely to retain his position until the next election, scheduled for 2017.

The opposition Islamic Action Front (the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood) will lead calls for reform, alongside left-wingers and youth groups. More moderate Islamist elements will be co-opted into the political process, and feature in the next parliament after the 2017 election, although only modest further electoral and political reforms are likely.

The king will maintain a pro-Western foreign policy. The instability in Iraq and civil war in Syria, in particular territorial gains made by a jihadi group, Islamic State (IS), and Russia's recent military intervention in support of the Syrian regime, pose a major security challenge to Jordan, as does the continuing influx of refugees. Jordan is stepping up its air strikes against IS and participating in a regional offensive against Yemeni rebels.
