The Economist Intelligence Unit expects King Abdullah II to remain in power and to continue to determine the overall pace and extent of political reform. He will allow some space for moderate opposition voices but will not fully satisfy the demands of his opponents. After the next election, scheduled for 2017, the king is likely to encourage some changes-including a greater say by parliament in senior appointments-to give the impression of reform.

The fractured Islamic Action Front (the political arm of the old Muslim Brotherhood) will be increasingly sidelined, as more moderate Islamist elements coalesce and show willingness to be co-opted into the political process and feature in the next parliament.

The king will maintain a pro-Western foreign policy. The instability in Iraq and civil war in Syria, in particular the threat from terrorist attacks and military campaigns by a jihadi group, Islamic State (IS), and international intervention in both countries poses a major security challenge to Jordan, as does the continuing influx of refugees. Jordan will continue to carry out air strikes against IS and to participate in a regional offensive against rebels in Yemen.
