Armenia has been extremely dependent on nuclear power since the last three decades in order to fulfill its increasing requirement for power and energy. The Metsamor nuclear power plant is responsible for producing about 40% of Armenia's electricity. It was closed due to the 1988 earthquake in Armenia.

However, blockades by Turkey and Azerbaijan, which created energy shortages in Armenia, caused the Armenian government to decide to reopen the plant in 1993. The Unit 2 reactor was brought back into operation on October 26, 1995. The plant has been operated by Russian company Inter RAO UES since 2003, as part of a five year term to help pay off Armenia's debts. The resources of the working Armenian nuclear power plant will be exhausted by 2016.

Of the 5.9 billion kWh gross generation in 2007, nuclear supplied 43%, hydro 31% and gas 25%. Electricity consumption per capita is about 1700 kWh/yr. Natural gas, which is imported from Russia, is its main source of primary energy. In August 2010, an intergovernmental agreement was signed to provide that the Russian party will build at least one VVER-1000 reactor, supply nuclear fuel for it and decommission it.
