Consumer Goods and Retail Report China 2nd Quarter
The Economist Intelligence Unit, April 2013, Pages: 17
The fastest growth in sales of consumer goods in China in the forecast period will occur in poorer third- and fourth-tier cities. In these locations, vast numbers of people will have more money to spend on consumer goods as their disposable incomes rise rapidly in 2013-17.
Foreign access in the retail sector, and in consumer-goods manufacturing, will be better than in many other parts of China's economy. Recent acquisitions of a number of Chinese household-goods brands by foreign firms suggest that the government is not particularly hostile to such takeovers.
Sales of most luxury items are likely to be dampened in 2013 by an anti-extravagance campaign aimed at government officials. This has compounded existing problems in the local sector linked to the high cost of luxury products in China relative to overseas markets. However, Chinese consumer demand will continue to drive growth in global sales of luxury goods in 2013-17.
