The Awami League (AL) government will dominate parliamentary proceedings in the first half of The Economist Intelligence Unit's forecast period. We expect that the AL will win a majority in the legislative election scheduled for 2019. The failure of the AL and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party to resolve a disagreement over the electoral process poses a small but ongoing risk to political stability.

Small, religiously motivated violent incidents will occur frequently in 2017-21, and there is a strong possibility of larger armed attacks. However, the security forces will prevent any marked deterioration in law and order, and overall political stability will be maintained. More lasting effects will, therefore, be restricted to the negative impact on foreign investment as international companies limit expansion in Bangladesh owing to security concerns.

Foreign policy will focus on ties with key regional players. Political and economic ties with India will continue to deepen over the forecast period. Relations with China will also be strong, with a particular focus on economic, investment and trade ties.
