The Awami League (AL) government will continue to dominate parliamentary proceedings until 2019. The failure of the AL and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to resolve their disagreement over the electoral process poses a small and diminishing risk to government stability.

Social unrest will remain a feature of local politics, but The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the security forces to prevent any marked deterioration in law and order. The BNP currently has no presence in parliament, and the party's ongoing use of hartals (mass strikes) to press its demands for electoral reform will ebb and flow prior to the next election in 2019. In addition to BNP-led protests, potential action by local groups supporting extreme Islamist views may pose a threat to political stability.

Foreign policy will remain focused on ties with India and China. Relations between the AL and India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will improve, but long-standing areas of disagreement, such as disputes over water-sharing, are unlikely to be resolved in 2016-20. Ties with China will improve.
