The Awami League (AL) government will continue to dominate parlia-mentary proceedings in 2015-19. The failure of the AL and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to resolve their long-standing disagreement over the electoral process continues to pose risks, albeit small, to political stability.

Social unrest will remain a feature of Bangladeshi politics, but The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the security forces to prevent any marked deterioration in law and order. Given that the BNP currently has no presence in parliament, the party's continued use of hartals (mass strikes) to press its demands for electoral reform will ebb and flow in 2015-19. Aside from hartals organised by the BNP, other factors that could lead to a rise in social unrest include unexpected shortages of food, power or water.

Foreign policy will remain focused on ties with India and China. Relations between the AL and India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party are expected to improve following a visit by the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, in June. Long-standing areas of disagreement, such as disputes over water-sharing, are unlikely to be resolved in 2015-19, but improved ties could encourage constructive debate over the issue.
