European Government Support for the Automotive Industry
SupplierBusiness, May 2012, Pages: 73
This report provides an overview of the European light vehicle market and its importance to various economies across the region. It looks at the European wide programmes and support that is currently or being put in place with specific analysis of policies and programmes in France, Germany, UK, Sweden and Spain as well as a look at both Russia and Turkey.
Furthermore the report examines how the national governments responded to the financial and economic crisis of 2008 to 2010 with support for the automotive industry, research and development and car scrappage schemes. It provides a good indication of their approach to the sector and the way in which they are likely to respond to similar circumstances should they arise in the future.
Background to this research
Over the past decade the automotive industry in Europe has undergone significant restructuring and market upheaval. This has resulted in both the EU and national governments having to provide support for the sector in some shape or form while at the same time ensuring they abide by the EU laws and regulations on state aid and free market competition.
In this report we have set out to look at the ways in which the EU and various governments across the European Community have established support structures for the automotive sector that are specifically designed to stimulate the market in times of economic crisis and to generally improve competitiveness, foster growth and encourage sector development in the medium to long term.
