The Storting (parliament) approved a government plan to sell shares it owns in several companies, including Scandinavian Airline System (SAS), in June 2011. The Storting also approved government purchase of shares in fertiliser manufacturer Yara and defence contractor Kongsberg Gruppen, through private placements.

A joint Norwegian-Swedish "green certificate" market started up from January 1st 2012. The intention is to help subsidise development of renewable energy and bring an additional 26.4 terawatt hours of electricity from renewable generation into the joint market by 2020.
