Qatar Telecommunications Report Q2 2012
Business Monitor International, April 2012, Pages: 110
Business Monitor International's Qatar Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Qatar's telecommunications industry.
Qatar's mobile market recorded its slowest growth yet in 2011, with total net additions of just 31,000 subscribers for the entire year. This reflected growth of 1.1%, considerably less than 11.7% in 2010. In contrast, the country's fixed-line and broadband sectors performed strongly during 2011, with growth rates of 4.5% and 21.5% respectively. In this quarter's update to their Qatar telecoms market report, BMI have revised their historical data and five-year growth forecasts for the mobile, fixed-line and broadband sectors, based on YE11 data from fixed-line incumbent operator Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and alternative operator Vodafone Qatar, a subsidiary of UK-based Vodafone Group Plc. BMI also analyse recent regulatory and industry developments, with the potential to affect current market dynamics, as well as future growth expectations.
BMI notes that penetration rates for their historical data and forecasts have been downgraded in this quarter's update because of an upward revision to the country's population estimate, based on new data from the World Bank.
According to market data published by Qatar's two mobile operators, BMI calculates there were 2.794mn mobile subscribers in Qatar at the end of December 2011. This was a penetration rate of 149.4%, down from 157.1% in 2010. Despite their forecast for positive growth over the next five years, albeit at a slower rate, mobile penetration is forecast to trend downwards as population growth outstrips net additions. By 2016, BMI expect Qatar's mobile subscriber base to reach 3.048mn, a penetration rate of 147.4%.
In view of the fewer subscriber growth opportunities in Qatar's mobile market, BMI expect competition dynamics between service providers to enter a new phase, defined by value addition and revenue growth as opposed to subscriber growth through discounting and promotional activities. Qatar is a wealthy country, with a GDP per capita of around US$77,000 and strong public and private consumption levels. This makes it well suited to providing high-value services. BMI expect Qtel and Vodafone to take advantage of this factor to pursue revenue growth and sustain profitability. 2011 saw a 20% appreciation in their weighted average ARPU for the mobile sector. BMI expect this trend to continue during their forecast period as the operators expand their high-value offerings, including data services and postpaid subscriptions. BMI have therefore upgraded their ARPU forecast in this update and expect market blended ARPU to exceed the QAR140 by 2016.
Qatar's fixed-line and broadband sectors grew strongly in 2011. BMI attributes this performance to the continued demand for multiplay services and the rapid deployment of fixed network infrastructure by the government and the operators. These factors, along with the increase in competition following the launch of commercial fixed-line services by Vodafone, are expected to drive growth during their forecast period. By the end of 2016, BMI forecast the fixed-line sector to have a penetration of 17%, up from 16.4% in 2011, while broadband penetration will reach 26.6% compared with 15.9% in 2010
