Bulgaria Food and Drink Report Q2 2012
Business Monitor International, April 2011, Pages: 119
The Bulgarian consumer outlook will remain challenging over the short- to medium-term at least. Issues such as economic difficulties – largely caused by the slowdown in its main export partners – and weak domestic demand will remain in play over the coming months. On the other hand, value growth of the food and drink market in Bulgaria will be depressed by disinflationary trends.

Key Industry Trends
Government Tightens Spirits and Wine Advertising Guidelines: In January 2012, the Bulgarian Cabinet passed a new Wine and Spirits Bill that prescribes minimum alcohol content for some beverages and bans the false labelling of beverages. Different brandies have their alcohol content set at minimums of between 37.5% and 47%, and alcohol for beverages must be of agricultural origin and not synthetic. Fines will be levied for counterfeiting brands in an effort to achieve compliance with EU regulations.
Delhaize Shutting Down Underperforming Stores in Bulgaria: Following its 2011 acquisition of Serbian Delta Maxi and its Bulgarian subsidiary Piccadilly, Belgian mass grocery retail (MGR) operator Delhaize recently announced the closing of six of its Piccadilly supermarkets and its Tempo hypermarket in Bulgaria, which have been judged as underperforming. Nevertheless, Delhaize also reportedly remains committed to its intention to launch new Piccadilly stores over the next decade.
Lidl to Expand Aggressively: German discount operator Lidl recently announced plans to open 65 new stores in Bulgaria over the course of 2012. Having opened 22 new stores in 2011, the announcement represents an aggressive ramping up of the company's expansionary efforts, with strong competition provided by German major Rewe's Penny discount format.
Key Risks To Outlook
Eurozone Difficulties Pose Downside Risks for Bulgaria’s Economic Performance: Bulgaria depends on Europe for around 60% of its exports. However, export growth, which is vital for its economic recovery, will continue to be challenged by weak eurozone performance, with the situation also posing challenges for Bulgaria’s financing needs and its longer-term balance of payment stability.
