Consumer Goods and Retail Report Chile
The Economist Intelligence Unit, August 2012, Pages: 18
Chile's retail sector is the most sophisticated in Latin America, and this has allowed leading retailers to expand aggressively in neighbouring countries, including larger markets such as Argentina and Brazil. A wide network of free-trade agreements (FTAs) within the region, and with large economies such as the US, Japan and China, has opened most consumer markets to foreign participation and has kept the cost of imported goods low.
Chile is a relatively small market, with a population of 17.2m in 2011, but personal disposable income per head is high by regional standards at an estimated US$8,281 in 2011, above that of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Nevertheless, this relatively high level of affluence is accompanied by high levels of income and geographical inequality, which has kept consumer demand from reaching its potential.
Chile's advantages lie in its large and profitable domestic retailers, as well as its food processing industry, much of which is geared toward export. However, the Chilean consumer market is dependant on imports in a number of key segments, most notably consumer electronics, clothing and footwear, and certain household goods.
