Consumer Goods and Retail Report Slovakia
The Economist Intelligence Unit, March 2013, Pages: 15
The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that growth in sales volumes will average around 2.8% annually in 2013-17. Sales are expected to accelerate after 2014, once the subdued growth resulting from the recession in the euro zone peters out. Slovakia has one of the youngest consumer bases in Europe, which bodes well for a recovery in sales volumes in the latter half of the forecast period.
The structure of the retail sector will continue to evolve towards Western patterns over the forecast period, but this evolution will favour the discount formats adopted by Western economies. In the second half of the forecast period smaller towns appear set to take on a greater role in retail outlet development.
Spending on food, beverages and tobacco was estimated at 21.3% of total household spending in 2012. The share of household spending devoted to these items is forecast to fall slowly, to around 19.5% in 2017.
