In October 2015 Alyaksandar Lukashenka won a fifth term as president. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects him to remain in office in 2017-18.

The government is mulling market-oriented structural reforms that would raise export competitiveness and ease strains on the public finances, but we doubt that these will go far enough to achieve an IMF lending programme.

Russia will remain Belarus's main economic, political and security partner.
