Country Report Belarus 1st Quarter

  • ID: 2138861
  • March 2015
  • Region: Belarus
  • 26 Pages
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit

Belarus will be one of the economies worst hit by the descent of Russia into recession in 2015, owing to extensive aid, investment and export ties.

With a rising possibility of social unrest ahead of a presidential election set for late 2015, the incumbent, Alyaksander Lukashenka, will further tighten the means of coercion to ensure a fifth successive term.

The authorities will be sorely tempted to loosen wage policy to retain the support of its political base, risking another financial crisis. The Economist Intelligence Unit still thinks Russian backing will prevent new destabilisation.
