Energy and Electricity Report China 4th Quarter
Description:
China's energy demand has soared as a result of three decades of strong economic growth. The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates total energy consumption in 2012 at 2.7bn tonnes oil equivalent (toe), representing growth of 110% since 2002. In 2009 China overtook the US to become the largest consumer of energy in the world.
However, the country's average energy consumption per head is low, at just over one-half of that in Japan and around one-quarter of that in the US, illustrating the substantial potential for Chinese energy demand to grow as the economy develops further.
The rebalancing of China's economy in 2012-20 will alter patterns of domestic energy consumption. The residential, transport and commercial sectors will play a larger role in supporting energy demand, whereas the proportion of energy consumed by industry will decline. This reflects the emergence of consumption as an important driver of China's economic growth, as well as government efforts to improve energy efficiency and to cultivate industrial clusters that are less energy-intensive.
