South Korea is one of the world's most oil-intensive industrialised countries. Energy demand is growing at a rate well above the OECD average, and the country consumes almost twice as much energy per unit of GDP as most European OECD countries.
Energy consumption grew by an estimated 3.1% in 2012, to reach 265m tonnes oil equivalent (toe). The Economist Intelligence Unit expects energy consumption to grow by an annual average of 2.9% in 2013-20. This reflects the rapid expansion of car ownership in South Korea, the growth of heavy industry and the energy inefficiency of much of the country's manufacturing sector.
Like most other industrialised countries, South Korea is pursuing policies designed to increase energy efficiency, improve energy security and increase the share of its energy that it obtains from renewable and cleaner sources, with the principal aim of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases.
