The energy sector accounted for about 4.4% of annual GDP and directly employed more than 171,000 people in 2011.

The UK retains significant supplies of coal, oil and natural gas. However, production has been in decline since the late 1990s, and is no longer sufficient to meet domestic demand. As the country relies increasingly on imports, its exposure to the risk of higher global energy prices will be heightened.

About one-third of power-generating capacity (mainly old nuclear plants and coal-fired stations) is due to be retired by 2015. Given a looming shortfall in electricity generation, gaps may emerge between demand and supply unless they are properly addressed.
