2009 Russia Medium Business Market Snapshot - Economic Impact, Buyer Profiling and Targeting
- Published: July 2009
Russia has a relatively large, albeit state-dominated, banking system. However, it lacks significant institutional investors because of the limited development of insurance and asset management activities. This hampers the development of the securities market and spurs some large domestic firms to seek equity capital on foreign exchanges.
In the event of another global downturn and a credit squeeze in the global markets (probably sparked by an intensification of the euro zone crisis), the Russian Central Bank (RCB) seems ready to provide liquidity support for the country's banks. The Ministry of Finance has complemented the RCB by playing an increasingly important role on the money market.
Economic growth is forecast to be solid in the coming years, but well below the rates achieved before 2008. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts average growth of 3.9% in 2013-17, down from 7.6% in 2004-07. Growth is estimated at 3.7% in 2012 as global growth has slowed. A relatively feeble banking sector, coupled with weak regulation, is one of several impediments to faster economic growth.
