As a percentage of GDP, Austria's spending on information technology (IT) is expected to remain roughly stable, fluctuating between 2.3% and 2.4% of GDP during the forecast period. Austria's total expenditure on IT in 2012 was an estimated US$9.3bn, amounting to 2.4% of GDP. This compares with slightly higher IT spending as a percentage of GDP in other major west European countries.
Hardware vendors experienced significant setbacks during the 2008-09 global economic crisis, as firms delayed capital upgrades and private consumers put off purchasing the latest devices. The decline in corporate IT spending was mitigated, however, by the vital role of technology in so many essential business processes. The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that form the backbone of the Austrian economy will be keen to become as technologically proficient as their bigger competitors, and are likely to make smaller upgrades in 2013 followed by more ambitious upgrades from 2014 as business confidence improves.
Personal computer (PC) penetration, at home and in offices, will continue to rise in 2013-17, albeit at a slower pace than in the previous five years as the market reaches saturation. Lower prices and the increasing availability of broadband Internet access and wireless networking will continue to drive demand for the latest laptop and tablet models.
