Despite Switzerland's relatively small size, spending on information and communications technology (ICT) is high as a share of total economic activity, reflecting both high consumer incomes and the strength of financial services as an information technology (IT)-intensive industry.

Swiss spending on IT amounted to an estimated 3.1% of GDP in 2012, at Swfr18.1bn (US$19.4bn). As a proportion of GDP, this places Switzerland just behind the highest-performing OECD countries, such as most Nordic countries (except Norway), the Netherlands and the UK, but ahead of neighbours France and Germany.

ICT spending per head in Switzerland is high compared with the west European average, partly as a result of the need for ICT services in financial services, machinery and equipment manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, in which Switzerland specialises.
