Telecoms and Technology Report South Africa
The Economist Intelligence Unit, March 2013, Pages: 12
South Africa has the most advanced telecommunications market in Africa in terms of technology deployed and services provided. The country also boasts the largest market in terms of revenue, at R186bn (US$26bn) in 2011.
Telecoms revenue is expected to rise steadily over the forecast period, with mobile voice services continuing to be the main revenue generator (fixed-line revenue is expected to be lower in 2017 than it was in 2012). However, the contribution of voice services is expected to fall, as the fastest-growing segment will be linked to broadband-based services, where penetration is currently low. Telkom, the former state monopoly provider of fixed-line services, is due to roll out broadband infrastructure to all citizens by 2019.
Telkom will continue to dominate the fixed-line telecoms market. However, changes to regulation will enhance competition from the second national operator, Neotel, which has successfully launched services over fixed-wireless code division multiple access (CDMA) and WiMax networks.
