Summary

Poland has two main regions for salt mining. The first salt basin in the Carpathian Foredeep main mining area of the Wieliczka, Bochnia, Zory and Rybnik regions, where the origin of salt deposits is related to the intense evaporation of sea water. In the Wieliczka area, salt was produced from the middle ages through the 19th century. Exploitation of these deposits ended in 1996, when salt mining was phased out in the Wieliczka mine. The areas proven resources of salt deposits are estimated to be over XX billion tons, accounting for XX% of the domestic resources. The second area of exploitation of rock salt is Shaft Gauteng, located on Lake Kujawsko-Pomorskie; the main production sites are Inowroclaw and Klodawa. Leba Elevation and the Fore-Sudetic monocline region’s deposits are estimated at almost 25 billion tons, accounting for XX% of domestic salt resources. Deposits of rock salt and potassium-magnesium salt were explored and proved in a number of the shallowest of these structures. Proven resources of deposits related to the salt structures are estimated at almost 56 billion tons, which account for XX% of the domestic salt resources. With this resource, exploration gives XX% of the Polish salt production in 2011.
