Data Sources:

- The data of outbound departures in this report is sourced from China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).

- The data of outbound tourist characteristics is based on the questionnaire survey on Chinese outbound tourists. This survey was co-conducted by China Association of Travel Services and Ivy Alliance Tourism Consulting Co., Ltd. from September 2010 to March 2011.

- The date of outbound travel business performances and market trends is based on the survey on the managers of the outbound departments of Chinese travel agencies as well as with tour operators and other key operators involved with outbound operations. This survey was co-conducted by China Association of Travel Services and Ivy Alliance Tourism Consulting Co., Ltd. from September 2010 to March 2011.

The study methodology involved the following elements:

- Desktop research

- Questionnaire survey on managers involved a number of formats including, face-to-face interviews, and the use of phone, fax and e-mail to elicit responses. (n = 86).

- Questionnaires for Chinese international travelers were distributed through various travel services, as these travelers returned from their respective travels. Response rate = 62% (2,230 returned forms from 3,600 survey forms given out)

- For the survey, the Chinese cities covered were as follows: Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Hohhot, Shenyang, Harbin, Dalian, Changchun, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Shanghai, Qingdao, Nanjing, Zhuhai, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Dongguan, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Xiangtan, Zhuzhou, Xi'an, Urumqi, Lanzhou, Xianyang, and Baoji.
