Abstract
A total of seven nuclear reactors at Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc.'s (TEPCO; AA/Stable/A-1+) Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station remain out of service due to damage caused by the Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki earthquake on July 16, 2007, and ensuing safety investigation. On July 31, 2007, TEPCO significantly reduced its earnings outlook and financial performance expectations for fiscal 2007 (ending March 31, 2008). At the same time, TEPCO announced plans to assess earthquake resistance levels at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power generation plant. In direct response to last month's earthquake, Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has announced that it will revise its seismic design screening guidelines and is urging all nuclear power plant operators to hasten their earthquake safety verification efforts.
