Abstract
The Australian and New Zealand credit market ended the 2004 year on a positive note, according to the latest quarterly fixed-income research by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services. In the final quarter of 2004, upgrades continued to exceed downgrades, repeating the trend in the previous three quarters, to ensure that the total upgrades outpaced downgrades for the calendar year. This is the lowest ratio of downgrades to upgrades since Standard & Poor's commenced publishing its local credit quality statistics almost a decade ago. The favorable result in 2004 was driven by ongoing improvements in financial operating performance of companies and sustained economic growth, creating a platform of strong underlying credit fundamentals, and is in line with favorable credit quality trends...
