Economic 360 for the UAE: Growth Prospects and Emerging Opportunities in the Manufacturing Industry

Frost & Sullivan, December 2011, Pages: 89

The manufacturing sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is undergoing a sea change and these changes are likely to drive economic growth between 2012 and 2015. Industries such as automotive, chemicals, cement, electrical machinery, power equipment, and food processing continue to gain momentum, while biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nuclear power, telecom equipment, aerospace, defence and healthcare equipment are expected to come into their own over the next three years. The manufacturing industry is a critical enabler of growth and development and is moving to the core of national competitiveness around the world. The UAE is anticipated to emerge as a logistically and economically viable manufacturing base in the cement, petrochemicals, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electrical machinery, power equipment, engineering and non-metallic mineral industries in the Middle East between 2012 and 2015. Large investments in these non-hydrocarbon sectors will lower the economy’s dependence on the volatile oil and gas industry as well as enable the middle income countries leapfrog to higher stages of development. Investments in the manufacturing industry can also boost productivity by advocating higher production capacity and higher economies of scale.

Policy makers are expected to channel the rising expenditure in manufacturing industries through special economic zones such as the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) and the Dubai Industrial City (DIC) between 2012 and 2015. Meanwhile, the manufacturing output will be boosted by the developments in oil & gas, petrochemicals, steel, power, automotive, aluminium and metallurgy and other energy-intensive manufacturing industries between 2011 and 2015. With the rise in globalization and the consequent signing of various trade agreements by different countries, manufacturing industries around the world are enjoying a plethora of opportunities. Emerging nations have initiated measures and policies to enhance manufacturing investments, and the industry has reciprocated by accelerating economic growth, stimulating foreign exchange earnings through exports and creating significant employment opportunities.

The UAE is likely to remain politically and economically stable in the short to medium term, with more flexible and prudent fiscal and monetary policies likely to be rolled out. The Government is striving to develop state-of-the art infrastructure that fosters a vibrant and export-oriented manufacturing industry. With large industrial cities and parks like Dubai techno parks, Emirates Industrial City (EIC) and Masdar Carbon Neutral City (MCNC), the Government is hoping to attract investments and establish the UAE as a hub for exports in the Middle East by 2020. There is considerable investment opportunities in the manufacturing of composite materials used in modern commercial aircraft and assembly plants for jet trainers. Rapid growth in petrochemical segments such as urea, ethylene and ammonia is also expected during 2011-2015.
