Economic 360 for the UAE: Growth Prospects and Emerging Opportunities in the Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is undergoing a sea change and these changes are likely to drive economic growth between 2012 and 2015. Industries such as automotive, chemicals, cement, electrical machinery, power equipment, and food processing continue to gain momentum, while biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nuclear power, telecom equipment, aerospace, defence and healthcare equipment are expected to come into their own over the next three years. The manufacturing industry is a critical enabler of growth and development and is moving to the core of national competitiveness around the world. Policy makers are expected to channel the rising expenditure in manufacturing industries through special economic zones such as the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) and the Dubai Industrial City (DIC) between 2012 and 2015. Meanwhile, the manufacturing output will be boosted by the developments in oil & gas, petrochemicals, steel, power, automotive, aluminium and metallurgy and other energy-intensive manufacturing industries between 2011 and 2015. There is considerable investment opportunities in the manufacturing of composite materials used in modern commercial aircraft and assembly plants for jet trainers. Rapid growth in petrochemical segments such as urea, ethylene and ammonia is also expected during 2011-2015.
