Economic 360 for China: Growth Prospects and Emerging Opportunities in the Aerospace Industry

Frost & Sullivan, January 2012, Pages: 108

China has been the fastest growing economy, expanding at 10.0 percent annually, driven by exports and investment. High priority is given to economic restructuring, from an export-driven to consumption-driven economy during the 12th five year plan period. The aerospace industry is a driver of economic growth, supported by government initiatives and increased investments. The recent development plans of the Government aim at transforming the aerospace industry from an OEM for parts and components to an aircraft designer and supplier. Opportunities exist in commercial aviation, technology of core components, MRO and aircrafts for low-attitude areas.

China recovered well from the economic recession, and in 2011, emerged as the fastest growing economy with a gross domestic product (GDP) of 9.2 per cent. The Government’s fiscal policy and monetary policy adjustments were mainly aimed at controlling inflation and managing inflation expectations. The Government is committed to stabilizing exports and boosting imports to reduce its trade surplus by converting the export-driven economy to a consumption-driven one during the 12th Five Year Plan. The aerospace industry has particularly emerged as an economy driver, supported by government initiatives and increased investment. The country’s recent development plans aim at developing the satellite manufacturing industry, regional aircraft and the national large aircraft projects. Opportunities also exist in the application of mature military technologies in the civilian market. Over the last decade, the whole industry has been transitioning from the scientific experiments stage to promoting applications. Technology breakthroughs for engines and important systems and equipment are likely to be at the core of the Chinese aerospace industry in the next five to ten years.

In 2012, China is heading towards a slower GDP growth and restructuring of its economic growth model. The highest growth in investment is expected in the seven strategic emerging industries of energy-saving environmental protection, new generation of information technology, biological technology, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, new materials and new-energy automotive. The 12th Five Year Plan for the development of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry is meant to benefit five major industrial segments - aviation, spaceflight, high-speed railway, marine engineering and smart equipment. The continuing investments in infrastructure construction and technology research will help China become another strong competitor in the aviation manufacturing market. Due to the rise in disposable income and the number of wealthy households, more enterprises will focus on boosting the sales of private aircraft. The next five years will present considerable opportunities in key components design and manufacture, aviation services and general aviation below 1,000 meters.
