Emerging Pharmaceutical Market in Argentina - Domestic Pharmaceutical Companies Dominate the Market with More Than 55% of the Industry Revenue

Summary

GBI Research’s new report, “Emerging Pharmaceutical Market in Argentina - Domestic Pharmaceutical Companies Dominate the Market with More Than 55% of the Industry Revenue” provides in-depth analysis of trends, issues and challenges in the pharmaceutical market in Argentina. The report analyzes the overall pharma and clinical trials market in Argentina. Furthermore, the report provides profiles for the leading pharmaceutical companies, Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and distributors; analyzes the macroeconomic environment; describes the healthcare regulations of Argentina and analyzes the strategic consolidations that shape the Argentine pharmaceutical market. This report is built using data and information sourced from proprietary databases, as well as primary and secondary research and in-house analysis by GBI Research’s team of industry experts.

Argentina is the third largest market for pharmaceuticals in Latin America. There are 230 registered laboratories and 110 manufacturing plants in Argentina and most of these are domestic. Over 80% of the laboratories and manufacturing plants are located in urban areas, especially in the province of Buenos Aires. The market has shown significant growth ever since the economic crisis during 2001-2002, due to the ageing population and high proportion of elderly people in the country’s population; growth in government healthcare expenditure; increased internal consumption of medicines and increasing prevalence of diseases which come under major therapy areas such as cardiovascular, Central Nervous System (CNS), gastrointestinal and metabolism, among others. A similarly positive trend is expected in the future due to a number of facts such as increasing internal consumption, a rise in the elderly population favorable strategic consolidations and increasing government healthcare expenditure. GBI Research expects the market to exhibit double-digit growth during the period 2010–2015.

GBI Research has analyzed the pharmaceutical market in Argentina and found that it is dominated by domestic pharmaceutical companies. Most of the domestic laboratories in Argentina are private and they explored the domestic market. The prescription drugs’ market accounted for about 90% of the market. Despite issues relating to Intellectual Property (IP) laws, multinational pharmaceutical companies are expanding their market presence by acquiring small domestic laboratories and through licensing agreements. The Argentine pharmaceutical market is one of the top emerging markets which have shown an annual growth rate of up to 22% in recent years. The economic growth of the country has been above the global average and the healthcare sector’s expenditure accounted for approximately 10% of the country’s GDP, of which the government’s healthcare spending accounted for over 60%.

According to GBI Research’s analysis, Argentina is an attractive market for pharmaceuticals and clinical trials due to a number of factors, such as the aligned legal provisions by Administración Nacional de Medicamentos, Alimentos y Tecnología Médica (ANMAT) (the principal regulatory body in Argentina) and Ministry of Health (MOH); increasing government healthcare spending; favorable healthcare infrastructure; public healthcare programs and a considerable number of licensing, M&As and co-development deals.

Argentina Takes Hold of Public Healthcare.

Argentina is boosting the health of their citizens thanks to strong government schemes that are providing medical attention to those that need it, while financially supporting the country’s in house pharmaceutical production, according to a new report from healthcare experts GBI Research.

The new report shows that the Argentine pharmaceutical market is expected to witness significant growth in the near future, based on predicted increases in government healthcare spending, which are set to support the country’s citizens by providing comprehensive medical care.

While 15 % of total government expenditure was spent on healthcare in 2009, a higher ratio than that of most emerging countries, schemes such as the Remediar program, which runs a network distributing essential drugs directly to local clinics in low-income neighborhoods and is funded by the government and the Ministry of Health (MOH), are set to further increase expenditure in coming years.

Argentina’s pharmaceutical market is one of the fastest-growing markets in Latin America, having blossomed since the country’s economic crisis of 2001-2002.

Amidst the financial turmoil, large domestic companies acquired the divested manufacturing facilities of multinational pharmaceutical companies and established themselves in the market to support the country’s healthcare needs.

The Argentine pharmaceutical market is therefore now dominated by local pharmaceutical companies, which accounted for 58% of the industry’s revenue in 2010. Pharmaceuticals produced by domestic laboratories within the country accounted for around 94% of the revenue, with only the remaining 6% of drug sales relying on foreign imports.

Most domestic laboratories in Argentina are private and dominate the local market due to strong brand awareness, effective business strategies, and high levels of influence on drugstores, pharmacies, healthcare professionals and patients. Strong associations also exist with experienced talent pools such as Cámara Industrial de Laboratorios Farmacéuticos

Argentinos (CILFA) and Cámara Empresaria de Laboratorios Farmacéuticos (Cooperala). The Argentine pharmaceutical market was estimated at $4.3 billion in 2010. GBI Research estimates that the market will grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.6% during the given forecast period (2010-2015).
