Poland’s production, domestic sales and foreign trade with chemical products all reported y/y growth in 2011. The performance of exports particularly was even above pre-crisis levels, statistical data show. Exports of chemical products last year increased by 19.1% y/y and by 34.6% compared to 2008, to over EUR 18.7bn. Exports further inched up by 5.1% y/y to nearly EUR 4.7bn in Q1/2012, yet slowing down from the 9.6% y/y in the previous quarter.
Chemical products output remained strong in 2011, after the recovery in 2010, driven by the good performance of plastics and fertilizers segments. Production of nitrogenous fertilizers advanced by 7.6% y/y to 1.8mn tonnes in 2011 and further by 12.9% y/y in Jan-Apr 2012.

The sold production of rubber and plastic products increased by 12.8% y/y to PLN 60.5bn (EUR 14.7bn) in 2011. Nonetheless, rubber product manufacturers express rather pessimistic expectations for 2012, as external demand for tyres has witnessed continuous decline this year and already forced local manufacturers to cut down production volumes.

Even so, the overall positive performance of the Polish chemical sector in Jan-Apr 2012 was above the EU average, where production contracted by 2% y/y in Q1/2012. EU chemical production slowed down in the past two quarters, in line with sluggish industrial activity in the region.

The prospects for the chemical sector remain optimistic for 2012, yet the performance of the sector remains linked to the overall evolution of the country’s economy and the global economic environment. One of the major drawbacks for the industry players is related to increasing energy prices, considering that gas accounts for up to 60% of costs of chemical producers. In order to alleviate the gas price hike, the government encouraged chemical companies to involve in shale gas exploration. The gas price hike will obviously dent into manufacturers’ profits, yet companies are expected to remain competitive as long as they do not pay a premium compared to neighbouring countries.

The financial results of major players paralleled the cheering performance of the chemicals sector in 2011. Particularly, the weakening of the local currency against EUR in Q4 boosted revenues of chemical exporters. The sale revenues of companies manufacturing chemical products increased by 18.2% y/y to PLN 51.3bn (EUR 12.5bn) in 2011 and further by 18.5% y/y to PLN 14.1bn in Q1/2012.
