NTT DoCoMo's i-mode Provides Competitive Edge for Second-Tier European Mobile Operators
Yankee Group, The, June 2004, Pages: 15
NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode is an always-on integrated mobile Internet and e-mail service using packet-switched data technology.
In some markets, services have been operational for up to 2 years, making it possible to reflect on the experiences of existing European i-mode carriers and offer views on the pros and cons of adoption. In this report, we aim to provide the definitive view on i-mode. We offer recommendations to existing carriers and provide MNOs in Europe with the information required to make an informed decision about whether to adopt the service. The report will help European MNOs answer these questions about adopting i-mode:
- How expensive, difficult, and time-consuming is it to deploy? - What will be the impact on key performance indicators (KPIs)? - How does i-mode compare to rival data service offerings? - How attractive is the business model to content developers? - How will it sit with existing service offerings? - Will it cannibalize existing revenue streams, such as SMS? - What needs to be done to adapt i-mode to the European market? - What are the benefits of membership in the i-mode alliance? - Are there enough attractive handsets available?
