Czech Republic Consumer Electronics Report Q4 2012
Business Monitor International, September 2012, Pages: 55
The Czech Republic Consumer Electronics Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, electronics associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Czech Republic's consumer electronics industry..
Executive Summary BMI forecasts single-digit growth for the Czech consumer electronics market in 2012, in a context of continued weakness in Czech consumer spending. In 2011, with a recovery in consumer sentiment elusive, smart TV sets and stronger sales of smartphones provided aright spots and helped to lift the consumer electronics market in H212. Data released by the Czech Statistics Office (CSO) show that household consumption contracted for the fifth quarter running in Q112 at -2.9% y-o-y, following a 0.7%
drop in Q411. In these circumstances, negative consumer sentiment (-25.3 in January) will continue to constrain consumer electronics spending.
The main consumer electronics growth drivers will be product innovation, rising incomes, lower prices and the growing popularity of feature-rich digital lifestyle products such as flat-screen digital TV sets,
notebook computers and digital cameras.
Headline Expenditure Projections:
Computer hardware sales: US$2.0bn in 2011 to US$1.9bn in 2012, -5% in US dollar terms.Forecast in US dollar terms downwardly revised due to macroeconomic factors as the corporate and public sector PC markets remain weak despite stronger demand from SMEs.
AV sales: US$1.6bn in 2011 to US$1.6bn in 2012, +3% in US dollar terms. Forecast in US dollar terms upwardly revised due to analyst modification with vendors reporting demand for smart TV and 3D TV sets.
Handset sales: US$646mn in 2011 to US$698mn in 2012, +8% in US dollar terms. Forecast in US dollar terms downwardly revised following a slight overall contraction in 2011.
Business Environment Rating:
The Czech Republic's score was 52.3 out of 100. The Czech Republic has dropped to third in CEE region in our latest RRR table, behind Poland and Russia. The Czech Republic's ranking is boosted by its high Country Risk score (74.3)
Key Trends & Developments:
- Several electronics retailers reported annualised decreases in sales, in part owing to lower prices,
which often offset rises in volume sales. However, leading chain Euronics reported 4% growth in 2011. Trading conditions remain difficult and consumer spending will be weighed down by fiscal austerity and still elevated unemployment, while rising inflation (which we forecast will average 2.4% in 2011) will continue to eat away at households' disposable income.
- Flat-screen TV sets will be the main driver of AV category sales growth over the forecast period as consumers upgrade and trade in their old models for digital ones. Analogue switch-off is being undertaken on a regional basis. The last regions to make the switchover are currently planned to be Zlin and Jihlava in June 2012, Prague made the transition to ‘all digital’ in May 2009
- Smartphones are forecast to account for above 50% of handset sales in 2012 and this share is expected to pass 70% by 2016 by value as average prices fall due to competition and operator promotions. By Q411, smartphones accounted for around 60% of mobile operator Vodafone’s local market handset sales, a share that rose to around 80% in the pre-Christmas period.
