Worldwide Study of the Protective Relay Marketplace in Electric Utilities: 2004-2006

Description: The Worldwide Study of the Protective Relay Marketplace in Electric Utilities: 2004-2006 is the fourth worldwide study of protective relays we have undertaken. The study will measure current market sizes and will contain projections, on a world region basis, for the next several years. The study will provide worldwide marketing information enabling suppliers to formulate effective product and marketing plans to participate successfully in the major growth market areas for protective relays and associated services in the world’s electric utilities.

The study, geared to the planning needs of protective relay suppliers, power industry consultants, and utility protection and control departments is divided into 5 volumes:

Volume I – North America.

Volume II – International.

Volume III – Executive Summary

Volume IV – Supplier Profiles

Volume V – Market Assessment.

This study will look into the following areas of interest: relay product awareness and current usage patterns; vendor evaluations; and, purchase plans and purchasing decisions. In addition, the following topics are covered:

- budget ranges and relay purchasing policies

- relay product information sources and distribution channels

- use of test switches; communications media

- the integration of protection and control

- what to expect from an “ideal” relay.

Response to this study will yield important market technology information enabling us to prepare this five-volume series with reliable forecasts for major classes and types of relays. The complete study of the world relay marketplace targets the following geographic areas:

- The United States

- Canada

- Europe

- The Pacific Basin

- Latin America,

- The Middle East,

- Mediterranean and African markets

Volume I – North America.

We have just completed a three-month research study and survey of protective relay usage patterns in the North American electric power business. Findings from more than 90 North American utilities, accounting for about one-third of all T&D expenditures and operating revenues, point to a number of changes in buying patterns and usage trends since our last topical study was completed in August 2002.

The percentage of digital relays in the mix of all protective relays used by utilities continues to increase. More than 40% of all generator and transmission line relays installed in the surveyed North American utilities are now digital units. The vast majority of new and retrofit units being purchased are also digital relays, but in some of the protection applications studied, such as motor protection and large generator applications, electromechanical and solid state relays continue to have a niche market position.

Additional highlights from the North American study include the following:

- Utilities do not want integrated test switches as part of the relay package for most relay applications. Bus differential and motor protection relays are somewhat of an exception.

- A five to eight percent increase in spending for protective relays among utilities is likely for this year, and planned again for 2005.

- About 50% of the relay procurement budget is for relay hardware, with installation expense accounting for more than one-quarter of the total, and engineering expenses for another 17% or so.

- Security enhancements to limit relay access are being developed by manufacturers and deployed by users.

- Slightly more than one-half of the respondents require IP addressability for new relays, and are looking for support for communicating event and history commands.

- Synchronization of internal relay clocks with a standard time base (GPS) is being reported as widely used or desirable among North American utilities.

- Utilities are trying to become compliant (if not already so) with loading requirements outlined in the recent NERC blackout recommendation 8A.

This survey of North American utilities included more than 20 detailed product functionality and related technical questions, incorporating more than 250 items of information from each of the participating utilities.
