Introduction
After attaining steady growth during 2000–06, the Spanish economy continued to decline in the second half of 2007 and 2008. It attained a growth rate of 1.1% in 2008 compared to 3.7% in 2007. The slowdown in 2008 came about as a result of the sharp drop in national demand due to weak consumption and investment expenditure. The downward trend continued in 2009 and the economy shrank by 3.7%.
