The media tablets market is in an explosive growth phase which will see worldwide unit shipments more than double from nearly 120 million units in 2012 to 250 million units by 2016.

A media tablet is not just another form factor for a portable computing device, which is what a netbook is. Instead, a media tablet amounts to a redefinition of portable computing.

For over 20 years, the portable computing industry's strategic remit has been limited to hardware elements: each year has seen the introduction of new hardware products that offer incremental improvements in memory size, processor speed, battery life, size and weight and so on.

This strategy will not work for media tablets.

Competition in the tablet market not only requires mastery of the hardware aspect but also requires that vendors come to market with an overall proposition that encompasses digital content, apps and supporting services - which are areas where portable PC vendors have been traditionally weak.
