Sustained growth in 2005 supported by increasing preference for self-medication The market for OTC healthcare in China saw growth of approaching 11% in current value terms in 2005, underpinned by the continued rise in the preference of consumers to self-medicate. According to the Survey of State Hygiene Service in 2003, almost 45% of the population in Chinese cities and towns, and 79% of the population in rural areas, have no medical insurance, which means they cannot reimburse their medical costs.
Thus these consumers tend to purchase medicines themselves instead of seeing a doctor’s advice, mainly due to the lower cost in the retail channel. On the other hand, while consumers in cities are able to reimburse the medical expenses, they are also willing to purchase medicines on an OTC basis for added convenience. |
