The Taiwanese Small Medium Size Display Panel Industry, 1H 2004 and Beyond

With Japanese makers leaving the STN LCD business, shipments from Taiwanese small and medium size panel makers performed strongly in the second quarter of 2004, growing 25.4% sequentially to approximately 137 million units. Shipment value reached around US$1 billion, a 41% sequential gain.
Rising inventories among Asia-Pacific mobile phone makers may lead Taiwanese STN makers to experience a peak season without peak shipments in the third quarter. Fortunately, other applications are expected to embrace the traditionally strong season. Driven by new customers and orders, overall Taiwanese small and medium size panel shipments are anticipated to climb 14.2% to 156.5 million units in the third quarter of 2004.
