Italy Telecom Intelligence Report: Mobile Data, Multiplay and Value-Added Services to Spark Growth
Pyramid Research, Inc, October 2012
Following the spectrum auction in September 2011, operators in Italy are focusing on launching LTE services driving 3G+ subscriptions to 75 percent of all SIMs in 2017, according to a new report from Pyramid Research.
Italy: Mobile Data, Multiplay and Value-Added Services to Spark Growth offers a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid's research in the market. It provides a detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.
“Both H3G and Vodafone claim they will make 4G services commercially available by the end of 2012,” says Pyramid Research Senior Analyst, Olena Kaplan. Vodafone even identified Ivrea to be the first town with 4G technology via the experimental frequency of 1.8Ghz. “A number of trials are currently underway in Italy to analyze the use of 800Mhz for LTE services to see if there is any interference with TV services,” she adds.
The Italian telecom market will generate €34.5bn ($45.0bn) in service revenue in 2012, demonstrating a -2.3% y-o-y decline in local currency terms. This decline should be viewed in light of the difficult macroeconomic position, with the nominal GDP in 2012 showing a decline of 7.6%, lower consumer purchasing power, the impact of the regulatory changes, and strong competition. For instance, in Q1 2012 the Italian Statistical office reported a -3.3% y-o-y decline in telecommunication prices.
