SUMMARY

In Q2 2012, a cumulative 140,757 MW of renewable energy capacity spread across 50 States in the USA generated 138,475 GWh of electricity. 2,601 MW of capacity have been added year to date across 28 States and electricity generation from renewable energy sources reached (year to date ) 266,509 gigawatthours, -5.19% lower than for the same period the previous year. Renewable energy accounted for 13.25% of total capacity across the USA as of June 2012 and has accounted for 34.00% of all added capacity year to date. The top 10 States for renewable energy capacity were : Washington, California, Texas, Oregon, New York, Iowa, Alabama, Idaho, Minnesota and Montana.

Primary energy production from renewable energy sources equalled 2,379 Trillion BTUs in Q2 2012, with Biomass and Hydroelectricity being the 2 largest sources. Year to date production of renewable primary energy has reached 4,673 Trillion BTUs, a decrease of -2.28% compared to the same period the prior year. Primary energy consumption from renewable energy sources meanwhile equalled 2,373 Trillion BTUs in Q2 2012, broken out as follows : Biomass (1094.96 tn BTUs, 46.14%), Hydroelectricity (807.92 tn BTUs, 34.05%), Wind (358.95 tn BTUs, 15.13%), Geothermal (56.63 tn BTUs, 2.39%) and Solar (54.42 tn BTUs, 2.29%).

Year to date, electricity generated from renewable energy was sourced (in descending order) from : Hydroelectricity (153,846 GWh, 57.73%), Wind (75,216 GWh, 28.22%), Biomass and Waste (27,360 GWh, 10.27%), Geothermal (8,424 GWh, 3.16%) and and in turn by Utilities (155,327 GWh, 58.28%), IPPs (95,769 GWh, 35.93%), CHP Industrial (14,179 GWh, 5.32%) and CHP Commercial (1,235 GWh, 0.46%). Consumption of renewable energy was split (in descending order) as follows : Electric Power (2,536 GWh, 54.83%), Industrial (1,126 GWh, 24.34%), Transportation (578 GWh, 12.50%), Residential (318 GWh, 6.87%) and Commercial (67 GWh, 1.46%).

A total of 20 new renewable energy plants were opened in Q2 2012 [Biomass (5), Geothermal (2), Hydroelectricity (1), Solar (6) and Wind (6)] and 3 plants were retired.
