Brightness enhancement light management (BELM) films have gained widespread acceptance due to their effectiveness in enhancing the brightness of backlight units in a wide range of applications such as Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) television sets, cell phones, computer monitors, notebooks, and laptops. Demand for these optical films is expected to spiral upwards in the near future buoyed by the rising demand for notebooks, cell phones, LCD panels, and laptops. Widely-used BELM film categories include prism film (marketed by 3M as Brightness Enhancement Film), diffuser film, polarization recycling film, reverse prism film, micro-lens film, and multifunctional prism sheet, all of which are used in various ways to enhance optical effectiveness. BELM films market continues to witness robust growth in value terms despite the falling prices of Brightness Enhancement Films (BEF or prism films) and the intense competition in the market.
Growth in the LCD panels market, slower pace of price declines in Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) lamps, and rising penetration rates of LED backlights augur well for the sales of brightness enhancement light management films in the coming years. In LCD TVs, brightness enhancement films are expected to play a vital role in enabling manufacturers to develop newer products that not only comply with the energy efficiency requirements and but also offer increased brightness, better impact quality, thinner form factors, and broader viewing angle.
As stated by the new market research report on Brightness Enhancement Light Management Films, Prism film is the most advanced category and holds the largest market share among all types of films. Prism film manages the angular output of light from the backlight, and is hence associated with concentrating light and increasing brightness. The most widely-used prism film is 3M’s BEF (brightness enhancement film). Though 3M continues to hold ground in the prism films market, the company’s share continues to decline due to increasing competition in the market.
With the patent expiry of 3M’s BEF, the entry of various competitors into the fray is leading to a fall in prices of prism film. Another widely-used BELM film is DBEF (Dual Brightness Enhancement Film) from 3M, which is a popularly used reflective polarizing film, and deals with recycling the backlight prior to its entry into the LCD panel thereby leading to significant improvements in the optical efficiency. Increasing sales of large-sized LCD televisions constitute a key driving factor for the DBEF market, as the film enhances both brightness and the amount of light available over the entire LCD offering superior viewing angle, and effectively controlling the build-up of heat in the backlight. However, a major drawback is the high cost of DBEF that prevents LCD makers from opting for the film. Brightness Enhancement Diffusers is witnessing robust growth owing largely to its lower cost compared to BEFs used in televisions and monitors, although they lag behind in terms of performance.
