United Arab Emirates Telecommunications Report Q4 2012

Business Monitor International, October 2012, Pages: 85

The United Arab Emirates Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on United Arab Emirates's telecommunications industry.

BMI View:

Continued investment in network infrastructure by the UAE’s two state-owned telecoms service providers, Etisalat and du, is a key growth factor in the country’s telecoms sector. However, with increasing saturation in the voice and data markets, we expect the operators to leverage the next general networks for revenue growth high-value corporate and personal services.

Key data:

- The mobile market grew at by an average quarterly rate of 4.3% during H112, considerably higher than an average quarterly rate of 1.8% during 2011.

- The fixed-line sector maintained positive growth in Q212, expanding by 2.2%, despite the ever increasing threat from fixed to mobile substitution.

- Broadband subscriptions rose by 3.8% q-o-q during Q212, highlight the strong demand for data services in the country.

Risk/Reward Ratings:

The UAE is in 5th position in this quarter’s update to BMI’s Risk/Reward Ratings (RRR) table. The UAE’s mobile market experienced strong subscriber growth and a slight uptick in ARPU during 2011.

However, the effect of this upgrade on the overall rating was offset by a downgrade to its Country Reward score. The UAE continues to be held back by a relatively low Industry Risk score which reflects the government's significant interest in the telecoms sector, with stakes in the two existing operators.

Key Developments:

In line with BMI’s view, the UAE's telecoms operators Etisalat and du introduced a range of new services during 9M12 to take advantage of the growing demand for high-value services fuelled by rising income levels. Notable services include du's 100Mbps FTTH services, with triple-play packages starting at AED999, and Etisalat's Value MMS service that offers an automated multimedia solution to corporate organisations, government agencies, and multinationals. Meanwhile, both operators are ramping up their IPTV offerings in a move that signals their intention to challenge traditional satellite broadcasters in the lucrative Pay-TV market.
